The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has announced a temporary restriction on access to the Telegram messaging platform in India ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination. The measure is intended to prevent the spread of misinformation and alleged examination-related fraud before the exam scheduled for June 21, 2026.
According to information released by the Ministry, the decision follows concerns regarding several Telegram channels and groups that were allegedly circulating misleading content, fraudulent claims, and purported examination paper leak materials related to the upcoming re-exam.
How the Telegram Restriction Could Affect More Than 104 Million Users in India
The move is expected to affect more than 104 million active Telegram users in India. This makes it one of the most significant temporary restrictions imposed on a major communication platform in recent years, given Telegram’s extensive use for education, communication, business, and community engagement.
The National Testing Agency stated that the action was taken to protect the integrity of the examination process and ensure a fair environment for all candidates. Authorities reportedly identified online networks that were allegedly promoting false information and exploiting students through fraudulent schemes linked to examination papers.
Multiple government agencies are said to be involved in the effort. These include the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). The agencies are reportedly investigating online activities connected to examination-related misinformation and fraud.
Officials have clarified that the restriction is temporary and should not be interpreted as a permanent ban on Telegram in India. The limitations are expected to remain in place only during the period surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.
Reports also indicate that authorities have directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature in India until June 30, 2026. Officials argue that the feature could potentially be misused to modify messages and create misleading records related to examination papers and alleged leaks.
The temporary restriction may affect students, educational communities, coaching groups, businesses, content creators, and general users who rely on Telegram for daily communication. Users may need to shift to alternative platforms until normal access is restored.
Meanwhile, the NTA has reiterated that the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination will proceed as scheduled on June 21, 2026. Candidates have been advised to rely only on official notifications and verified communication channels for updates regarding the examination.
