Hyderabad/Aurangabad: January 7, Posted on 8:18 PM IST

An alleged attempt was made on Tuesday to attack the car of former Member of Parliament and AIMIM leader Imtiaz Jaleel in the Bajipura area of Aurangabad, triggering fresh political tension ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.

According to police, the incident occurred while Imtiaz Jaleel was travelling through the area when a group of four individuals reportedly chased his moving vehicle and attempted to stop it. Visuals circulating locally suggest that the individuals tried to pull him out of the car, though he managed to escape without serious injury.

Significantly, sources indicate that those involved in the incident were allegedly part of a disgruntled faction within the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) itself. The dissatisfaction is believed to be linked to ticket distribution and internal disagreements ahead of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation elections.

Police personnel reached the spot shortly after the incident and have begun examining CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to establish the sequence of events. Officials said that further action would be taken after verification of facts. As a precautionary measure, security arrangements around political leaders have also been reviewed.

Meanwhile, AIMIM leaders have appealed to supporters to remain calm and ensure that election campaigning stays within constitutional and democratic limits. Addressing party workers earlier, Imtiaz Jaleel urged supporters to avoid confrontation and cooperate with police authorities, reiterating that the party would pursue a lawful and peaceful campaign.

MIM Spokesperson and Former MLA Waris Pathan condemned the attack and urged government to take strict action against those who had involved.
