Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has cautioned that mixing Delimitation with the Women’s Reservation Bill is dangerous. He warned that if seats are increased purely on a population basis, power would shift from South India to North India, and states that successfully controlled population growth would lose representation.
Calling this unacceptable, he proposed a hybrid model for seat distribution — 50% based on population and 50% based on economic contribution (GSDP). He also emphasized the need for all-party consultations, an expert committee, and detailed parliamentary debate before any decision is taken.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy addressed a press meet on Monday highlighting the importance of numerical strength in politics, criticizing the BJP’s stance on women’s representation and discussing seat redistribution issues.
Revanth Reddy emphasized that in politics, numbers matter more than percentages, especially in the context of seat redistribution. He cited the fall of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government by a single vote as a classic example of how crucial numbers are in political decision-making.
He stated that without sufficient numbers, no political negotiations or alliances can take place. Stressing fairness, he urged that well-performing states should not be penalized during the redistribution process.
The Chief Minister also launched a strong critique against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), pointing out that since its formation on April 6, 1980, the party has had 15 presidents but has never appointed a woman as its national president. He questioned the party’s commitment toward women’s empowerment.
In contrast, he highlighted that the Congress party has a history of promoting women leadership, citing Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, who led the party for extended periods. He argued that Congress has consistently worked for women’s welfare over the past six decades.
Revanth Reddy further alleged that BJP leaders’ statements are against women, Scheduled Castes (SCs), and Scheduled Tribes (STs), particularly in southern states. He warned that leaders should speak responsibly, especially on sensitive issues.
He also announced plans to unite southern states along with smaller states like Delhi and Punjab to oppose any unfair redistribution measures. He said that Members of Parliament from Telangana would continue to fight for the state’s interests.
Reaffirming Congress’s legacy, he stated that the party played a key role in securing independence, drafting the Constitution, and implementing reservations. He concluded that Congress now holds the responsibility to safeguard the nation’s future.
