Hyderabad, July 21: A disturbing crime wave has hit Hyderabad, with nine members of the Muslim community murdered across the city in the last 45 days. Out of more than 30 murders recorded since June 5 within the Hyderabad, Rachakonda, and Cyberabad limits, these nine cases have highlighted a chilling trend.
Police investigations reveal that substance abuse was a primary factor in at least five of the nine killings. The victims include seven men and two women, with motives ranging from financial disputes to domestic altercations fueled by intoxication.
The incidents paint a grim picture. On June 29, Syed Shahid was allegedly killed by friends who lured him out on the pretext of drinking. On July 9, Sheikh Mohammed was murdered by his wife, who claimed he harassed her while drunk. In another case on July 12, the body of cab driver Aziz Azhar was found, with police linking his murder to a dispute over the ganja trade.
Authorities have noted that in several instances, liquor bottles were found near the victims. This pattern has raised serious concerns about the role of alcohol and drugs in escalating violence, prompting calls for urgent community-level action.
