The Congress Party in the state is facing growing political pressure over a possible Telangana cabinet expansion, with three ministerial berths reportedly vacant following the removal of Konda Surekha. Several senior and younger leader’s names are being discussed as possible contenders, while social representation has emerged as a key factor in the internal debate.
According to observers this cabinet expansion would key ahead of upcoming urban local body elections, particularly the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Congress leaders are reportedly weighing how cabinet representation could strengthen the party in Hyderabad and the erstwhile Rangareddy region.
The political discussion is not limited to seniority. According to a senior leader competing formulas include representation for Backward Classes (BCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), women and senior leaders from the Reddy community. For the BC category, the names of Vemulawada MLA Adi Srinivas, Beerla Ilaiah and Jubilee Hills MLA Naveen Yadav are mentioned in the political discussion. Naveen Yadav is also being linked to a possible youth-focused formula, with the party’s younger generation seen as another factor in the selection process.
The possible inclusion of a Yadav leader has an additional political dimension because of the upcoming GHMC elections. A senior Congress leader says that representation from a Yadav leader could allow Congress to highlight social representation within the Hyderabad region.
ST representation is another major issue. The names of Ramachandra Naik and Devarakonda MLA Balu Naik are mentioned as possible contenders. Ramachandra Naik has reportedly been announced for the Deputy Speaker’s position but, he has not taken the oath. This creates an additional question over whether he could instead be considered for a ministerial role.
Balu Naik is described as a senior legislator whose name is also being discussed. However, the Nalgonda district already has two ministers, Uttam Kumar Reddy and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy. Any decision involving Balu Naik would therefore have to be considered alongside regional representation.
A separate debate concerns the women’s quota. The names of Congress MLC Vijayashanti, Parkal MLA Yashaswini Reddy and Parnika Reddy are mentioned in the list of possible contenders. Yashaswini Reddy is discussed in connection with youth and women’s representation, while Vijayashanti is mentioned as a senior woman leader who returned to the Congress and was subsequently given an MLC position.
The Reddy community also has several senior aspirants. Ibrahimpatnam MLA Mallareddy Rangareddy, Munugode MLA Rajagopal Reddy and senior leader Sudarshan Reddy are among the names mentioned as seeking consideration and these leaders have been lobbying for ministerial positions.
Hyderabad and the erstwhile Rangareddy district are at the centre of the political calculations. The sources said that the Congress faces pressure to provide stronger representation to the capital region and surrounding constituencies, particularly as the party prepares for local elections.
When Could the Telangana Cabinet Expansion Happen?
The timing of the Telangana cabinet expansion remains uncertain. The possibility of an expansion around the Assembly session, while another possibility mentioned is a decision around the Dussehra period. The larger question for the Congress leadership is how to fill three vacancies while balancing social representation, regional considerations, seniority and youth leadership. The final decision is expected to depend on the party high command’s political calculations.
