The Telangana government has announced plans to establish a world-class Sports University with the objective of developing athletes capable of winning Olympic medals in the future. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka made the announcement on Sunday while attending the inauguration of the TG 20 Cricket League at Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Chief Minister said the government’s primary goal is to identify talented young athletes, particularly from rural areas, who often lack opportunities and professional training. He stated that many gifted youngsters remain unnoticed because of limited access to sports infrastructure and coaching facilities. The proposed Sports University aims to bridge this gap by providing international-standard training and modern facilities.
According to Bhatti Vikramarka, the government intends to create a strong sports ecosystem that will prepare athletes for national and international competitions, including the Olympic Games. The Deputy Chief Minister expressed confidence that the newly launched TG 20 Cricket League would serve as an important platform for nurturing sporting talent across Telangana.
He said that cricket was traditionally viewed as an urban sport, but the present government has worked to identify talented players from every district in the state. District-level teams have been formed to provide opportunities for young athletes from rural areas. Bhatti Vikramarka emphasized that the government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has given high priority to sports development and remains committed to encouraging athletes.
The Deputy Chief Minister also announced that Hyderabad would soon have an international-standard Sports University equipped with modern infrastructure and advanced training facilities. He noted that the announcement was made at Uppal Stadium, a venue that has hosted several international sporting events and personalities in the past.
According to the government, the proposed institution will focus on scientific training, coaching excellence and athlete development programs aimed at preparing future Olympians. The TG 20 Cricket League, which is scheduled to continue for 21 days, is expected to attract sports enthusiasts from across the state and provide emerging cricketers with valuable exposure.
Bhatti Vikramarka assured participants and organizers that the Telangana government would extend full support to ensure the success of the tournament.
