Telangana Hikes Dearness Allowance for Power Employees; Over 70,000 Staff to Benefit

Hyderabad, June 17: The Telangana Government has approved a 1.621 percent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for employees and pensioners working in the state’s power sector, benefiting 70,804 personnel across various electricity utilities.

The decision was taken by Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka during a review meeting of the Energy Department held at the GENCO headquarters in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The enhanced DA will be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2026.

With the latest revision, the DA for power sector employees has increased from 17.651 percent to 19.272 percent. The move is expected to impose an additional financial burden of approximately ₹9.35 crore per month on the government.

Record Power Demand Met Without Interruptions

During the meeting, Bhatti Vikramarka reviewed the performance of the state’s power utilities and praised officials and employees for ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply despite record demand during the summer season.

He noted that Telangana recorded its highest-ever peak power demand of 18,548 MW on March 27, 2026, while electricity consumption touched a record 341 million units on March 13, 2026. Despite the unprecedented demand, power utilities successfully maintained uninterrupted supply through advance planning and efficient management, he said.

Power Demand Expected to Double by 2035

The Deputy Chief Minister directed power sector officials to prepare a comprehensive long-term strategy to meet Telangana’s growing electricity needs over the next decade.

According to projections discussed during the review, the state’s peak power demand is expected to reach 34,137 MW by 2035-36, nearly double the current level. Annual electricity consumption is also projected to rise to 152,626 million units (MU) by the same period.

He stressed the need to strengthen infrastructure, expand transmission and distribution networks, and ensure that the power sector remains equipped to handle future demand.

Monsoon Preparedness a Priority

With the monsoon season approaching, Bhatti instructed officials of TRANSCO, SPDCL, and NPDCL to remain on high alert and ensure uninterrupted power supply during heavy rains and storms.

He directed field-level engineers and staff to respond immediately to power disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions and implement all necessary preventive measures to avoid electrical accidents during the rainy season.

The meeting was attended by Energy Department Special Chief Secretary Naveen Mittal, Finance Principal Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Singareni CMD Jyoti Buddha Prakash, TRANSCO CMD Krishna Bhaskar, GENCO CMD Harish, NPDCL CMD Varun Reddy, SPDCL CMD Jitesh Patil, Transmission Director Sampath Kumar, Projects Director Latha Vinod, and other senior officials from power sector organizations.
