Telangana Plans New Airport Corridors To Reduce Hyderabad Traffic

Hyderabad is set to witness a major transportation upgrade as the Telangana government prepares multiple elevated corridors aimed at improving connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The projects are intended to reduce congestion on some of the city’s busiest roads and provide faster access to the airport.

The latest initiatives indicate a broader mobility strategy that connects western, central and southern parts of Hyderabad through signal-free routes. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has initiated the process for appointing an independent Project Management Consultant for a proposed six-lane elevated corridor connecting Mailardevpally, Shamshabad Road and Katedan junction.

The project is estimated to cost around ₹345 crore and is being implemented under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) programme. Officials say the corridor will help create a seamless traffic flow on one of Hyderabad’s busiest airport routes. Besides airport passengers, residents of nearby industrial areas and the IT corridor are also expected to benefit.

The project will be executed through the Engineering, Procurement and Construction model, under which a single contractor will handle the design and execution.

Second Elevated Corridor Planned from Banjara Hills

At the same time, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority has begun surveys for another elevated corridor connecting GVK One Mall at Banjara Hills Road No. 1 to the PVNR Expressway through Masab Tank. The proposed four-kilometre corridor aims to address heavy congestion around Banjara Hills and Masab Tank, two of the city’s major traffic bottlenecks.

Although the PVNR Expressway already offers a quick route to the airport, commuters often spend considerable time navigating traffic near GVK Mall, Taj Krishna, Care Hospital and Masab Tank before entering the expressway. Urban planners believe these projects represent a larger integrated airport access strategy. Once completed, residents travelling from areas such as Begumpet, Somajiguda and Punjagutta may be able to access airport routes with significantly fewer traffic interruptions.

Several supporting structures are also under consideration. Authorities are planning a down-ramp near Road No. 12 in Banjara Hills, another structure near Chintalbasti, and an additional up-ramp close to the NMDC building to improve traffic distribution.Airport passengers have frequently complained that reaching the PVNR Expressway often takes longer than travelling on the expressway itself. Peak-hour congestion around Masab Tank and Banjara Hills regularly causes delays for travellers.

Officials believe the proposed infrastructure projects will provide a dependable and faster route to the airport while reducing congestion in surrounding areas. The projects also align with the Telangana government’s broader transportation vision, which includes the Old City Metro expansion and other H-CITI initiatives aimed at modernising Hyderabad’s urban infrastructure.

If completed within the proposed timelines, these elevated corridors could substantially transform airport connectivity and provide long-term relief to thousands of commuters who use these routes every day.
