Mahbubnagar district in Telangana is set to undergo a major transformation as the state government plans to develop it into a key medical hub for South Telangana. The announcement was made by State Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha during a public health awareness programe held in the district.

The initiative aims to significantly improve healthcare infrastructure and accessibility in the region. Authorities have outlined plans to ensure that nearly 95% of medical treatments will be available within the district headquarters, reducing the need for patients to travel to larger cities.

A major focus of the plan is the upgradation of Mahbubnagar Medical College into a referral center. The institution will see the addition of 14 new departments, increasing its capacity to provide specialized medical services. Efforts are also underway to expand postgraduate (PG) seats and recruit additional faculty, including assistant and associate professors.

The government also plans to introduce advanced healthcare facilities such as an organ transplantation center and a vascular access center. These additions are expected to enhance the district’s capability to handle complex medical cases locally.

Infrastructure development remains a key priority. Plans include the construction of hostels, an auditorium, sports facilities, and improved medical equipment within the college. A new nursing college building, along with hostel and transport facilities, is also proposed to strengthen medical education in the region.

In addition, trauma care centers are expected to be established along national highways to provide emergency services for accident victims. The state government has also announced the recruitment of 2,322 nursing officers, which will further support healthcare delivery across Telangana.

During the meeting, the minister interacted with medical students to understand their challenges and assured them of improved facilities. He emphasized that the development of Mahbubnagar Medical College would be modeled on established institutions like Osmania Medical College.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to decentralize healthcare services and ensure quality treatment is accessible to all sections of society. Officials believe that once completed, Mahbubnagar will emerge as a major healthcare destination in South Telangana.
