The first edition of the Telangana Legislators Sports and Cultural Meet 2026 was inaugurated at LB Stadium in Hyderabad, with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy attending as the chief guest. The event also saw the presence of key political leaders, including the Assembly Speaker, Legislative Council Chairman, Deputy Chief Minister, ministers, MPs, MLAs, and MLCs.
The initiative aims to provide a platform for public representatives to engage in sports and cultural activities, promoting a spirit of wellness and teamwork beyond political responsibilities. Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of balancing governance duties with physical and recreational activities.
He noted that political leaders are often deeply engaged in addressing public issues, leaving little time for relaxation. Events like this, he said, offer an opportunity to rejuvenate and promote sportsmanship among leaders.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the need to revive sports culture in Telangana, stating that such enthusiasm had declined after the formation of the state. To address this, the government has introduced a new sports policy and initiated competitions like the CM Cup to identify and nurture talent from grassroots levels.
Drawing comparisons on a global scale, he pointed out that despite having a population of over 1.4 billion, India has struggled to secure Olympic medals, whereas countries like South Korea have achieved significant success with smaller populations.
The government, he said, is committed to supporting athletes in all possible ways. He urged students to focus not only on academics but also on sports, encouraging them to develop a competitive spirit.
Additionally, plans are underway to upgrade LB Stadium and other sports facilities such as Gachibowli Stadium and Begumpet Hockey Ground to international standards. These developments aim to position Hyderabad as a hub for global sporting events.
