Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on the ongoing conflict in West Asia, highlighting its potential impact on India. He warned that the situation could disrupt energy supplies and create challenges similar to past crises like Covid. The statement comes amid rising global concerns over economic and security implications.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday broke his silence on the ongoing conflict in Iran and the broader West Asian region, cautioning that the war could have far-reaching consequences for India. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Modi emphasized that the situation remains “concerning” and is already impacting global economic stability.
He noted that India faces multiple challenges due to the conflict, including economic pressures, national security concerns, and humanitarian responsibilities. The region plays a crucial role in global trade and energy supply, making it vital for India’s oil and gas imports.
The Prime Minister highlighted that a significant portion of India’s energy needs, including crude oil and natural gas, is sourced from West Asia. Disruptions in shipping routes, particularly in strategic areas like the Strait of Hormuz, could lead to supply chain issues and increased costs.
Another major concern raised was the safety of Indian nationals abroad. Nearly 10 million Indians live and work in Gulf countries. The government has been actively coordinating with regional authorities to ensure their safety. Modi stated that over 375,000 Indians have already been brought back safely amid the crisis.
Addressing fears of a broader domestic impact, Modi warned that India must remain prepared for unexpected situations. Drawing a comparison with the COVID-19 pandemic, he stressed the importance of unity, preparedness, and vigilance in dealing with any crisis.
The government, he added, is taking proactive measures to ensure energy security. These include diversifying import sources, maintaining strategic petroleum reserves, and boosting domestic production of alternative fuels such as ethanol.
Modi reiterated India’s long-standing position of supporting peace and diplomacy. He urged all parties involved in the conflict to resolve differences through dialogue and avoid further escalation.
He concluded by calling for national unity and caution, warning against misinformation and panic during such sensitive times.
