A breathtaking all-round performance by Nadine de Klerk powered Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a dramatic three-wicket victory over defending champions Mumbai Indians in the opening match of the Women’s Premier League.

Chasing a target of 155, RCB appeared firmly on the back foot for much of the contest. A disastrous middle phase saw them collapse to 65 for five inside eight overs, placing the batting side under immense pressure early in the chase.

The situation worsened as RCB slipped further to 121 for seven with just three overs remaining. Even after 17 overs, the equation looked daunting, with 34 runs required from the final 18 deliveries. Mumbai Indians appeared well on course to defend their total.

However, a steady penultimate over reduced the target to 18 runs from the final six balls, setting up a thrilling finale. England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was entrusted with the final over, and she began strongly with two dot balls, increasing the pressure on the batting side.

What followed was an extraordinary counterattack. De Klerk swung the momentum decisively, smashing a six, a four, and another six off consecutive deliveries to turn the match on its head. The sudden shift left the defending champions stunned.

With two runs required from the final ball, De Klerk kept her composure and struck the ball straight back over the bowler’s head, sealing a remarkable victory and triggering jubilant celebrations in the RCB camp.

The win marked a dramatic start to the Women’s Premier League, underlining the growing intensity and competitiveness of the tournament. De Klerk’s calm under pressure and fearless stroke play ensured the match will be remembered as one of the most thrilling season openers in WPL history.
