Hyderabad, June 19: The Government of India has granted a major approval for the Gandhi Sarovar Project at Bapu Ghat, providing a significant boost to the Telangana Government’s ambitious Musi Riverfront Development initiative. The Ministry of Defence has formally permitted the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation (MRDC) to undertake development work on defence land located within the Artillery Centre, Golconda.
According to an official communication issued by the Ministry of Defence, working permission has been granted to MRDC for the development and upgradation of Bapu Ghat into the proposed Gandhi Sarovar Project. The approval covers 83.814 acres of defence land and has been accorded under the Equal Value Infrastructure (EVI) framework in accordance with Ministry of Defence policies.
The official document states that the total valuation of the defence land involved in the project is approximately ₹533.42 crore. The identified land parcels are spread across Bandlaguda, Hyderguda, Quila Mohd Nagar, Gandipet, Rajendra Nagar and Golconda areas.
The approval is being viewed as a major milestone for the Musi Riverfront Development programme, which aims to rejuvenate the Musi River, improve environmental sustainability, and create world-class public spaces along the river corridor.
Welcoming the development, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed his gratitude to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army for extending their support to the state government.
The Chief Minister stated that the approval marks an important milestone in Telangana’s vision for the comprehensive rejuvenation of the Musi River and the transformation of its riverfront into a vibrant ecological, cultural and public asset for citizens.
“We are grateful for the support and cooperation extended by the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army,” the Chief Minister said, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the state and central authorities in advancing the project.
Officials believe the Gandhi Sarovar Project will significantly enhance the urban landscape of Hyderabad by creating improved recreational spaces, strengthening environmental conservation efforts and boosting tourism potential around the riverfront.
The project is also expected to play an important role in the broader urban renewal strategy being pursued by the Telangana Government. With the Defence Ministry’s clearance now in place, attention is expected to shift toward implementation, infrastructure development and environmental planning.
Urban planners and civic authorities have long advocated for comprehensive riverfront development to address ecological concerns while creating sustainable public spaces. The latest approval is likely to accelerate those efforts and pave the way for one of Hyderabad’s most prominent urban transformation projects.
