The Assembly election trends in Assam indicate a significant political shift affecting the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led by Badruddin Ajmal. The results show a sharp decline in the party’s performance compared to the 2021 elections.
In the previous assembly elections, AIUDF had secured 16 seats, establishing itself as a key player in Assam politics. However, current trends suggest that the party is now leading in only two constituencies, marking a substantial setback.
Badruddin Ajmal himself is contesting from the Binnakandi constituency and is reportedly leading by around 14,000 votes. Another AIUDF candidate, Mujibur Rahman, is also ahead with a margin of approximately 12,000 votes. Despite these individual leads, most other candidates from the party, including senior leaders, are trailing.
On the other hand, the Indian National Congress overall performance is weak but party has emerged stronger in the Ajmal’s strongholds, leading in 24 constituencies. Notably, 19 of these candidates are from the Muslim community. This indicates a shift in Muslim voter support toward Congress, which appears to have impacted AIUDF’s traditional voter base.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is significantly ahead, leading in around 80 seats. With the majority mark set at 64, the BJP is well-positioned to return to power in the state.
It is also noteworthy that AIMIM leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had campaigned in support of AIUDF. However, despite this, the party’s performance has not met expectations.
The results suggest a changing political landscape in Assam, where voter preferences, especially among minority communities, are evolving. At the same time, Congress appears to have struggled to attract votes from Hindu and tribal communities, which may limit its overall gains
