Crimes against women in Telangana saw a 3.16% rise in 2025 compared to 2024, according to the state police’s latest comparative crime statement released the Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy during the annual press conference on Tuesday.

Telangana recorded 20,551 cases of crimes against women in 2025, up from 19,922 in the previous year. The overall crime rate stood at 94.33 per lakh population.

The data showed varying trends across different crime categories. Dowry-related crimes remained relatively stable, with dowry murders unchanged at 22 cases and dowry deaths slightly rising from 126 to 127. Abetment of suicide cases fell by nearly 10%, from 379 to 342, and dowry harassment saw a small decline of 2.01%, totaling 8,793 cases in 2025.

However, murders of women increased marginally by 2.9%, reaching 248 cases. Rape cases saw a significant reduction of 13.45%, falling from 2,945 to 2,549. Kidnapping and abduction cases of women also declined by 10.61%, with 1,003 incidents reported.

Conversely, cases under “outraging the modesty of women” rose sharply by 9.02%, from 5,940 to 6,476, indicating a rise in harassment and assault cases. Bigamy cases declined by 15.48%, to 142 cases in 2025.

A notable addition this year was the new category under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — “sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means” (Section 69) — with 843 cases reported.

The DGP also recorded a fall in cases under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, with 2,042 cases in 2025 compared to 2,257 in 2024, marking a 9.52% decline. Rachakonda, Cyberabad, Ramagundam, and Warangal reported the highest number of cases under this Act.

Senior police officials emphasized the importance of enhanced monitoring and victim-focused policing, noting that while serious crimes like rape have decreased, harassment cases need more focused intervention.
