Telangana Liquor Sales Hit New High, Social Impact Ignored

Liquor sales in Telangana have touched record levels once again. From December 1 to December 4, alcohol worth nearly ₹600 crore was sold across the state, according to Excise department officials.

Sales during these four days crossed 578.86 crore rupees. Officials also reported a sharp year-on-year rise. Liquor sales increased by 107 percent compared to the same period last year.

Beer sales also show clear growth. During these four days last year, only 4.26 lakh cases of beer were sold. The current sales reflect a major jump in consumer demand.

The liquor policy period from 2023 to 2025 ended on Sunday. Sales during the last two years have been higher than usual. During this period, Telangana recorded the sale of 724 lakh liquor cases and 960 lakh beer cases.

The Excise department has also earned significant revenue from liquor shop applications. In October, it collected around ₹2,860 crore through non-refundable application fees. The fee was increased from ₹2 lakh to ₹3 lakh after the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi government period.

Liquor sales in Telangana are growing, but the social impact is not getting enough attention. Easy access to alcohol is linked with a rise in domestic violence, health problems, road accidents, and crime. Many families are facing stress and financial losses due to increased drinking. Community groups say the government is focused on earning revenue from liquor sales, while public awareness, rehabilitation programs, and preventive measures are limited. A balanced policy is needed to protect public health, reduce crime, and improve social well-being.
