He began the season by equalling his personal best of 17.19m in the Open Jumps Competition in Bengaluru in March this year, following with gold at the Taiwan Athletics Open (16.21m) in June, and another gold at the World Athletics Continental Tour (16.08m) in Bhubaneswar last week . This inter-state meet provides Indian athletes one last chance to qualify for the upcoming Worlds in Tokyo in September. Aboobacker remains one among a handful of athletes who may qualify via rankings. However, the 29-year-old is not going to settle with the current ranking. “I would like to put up a ...

The Good News About Those “Radioactive Shrimp”

Earlier this week, the Food and Drug Administration advised the public not to eat certain Great Value–brand raw frozen shrimp products for a rather unusual reason. Not because of contamination by bacteria like Salmonella, Listeria, or E. coli, which were responsible for more than a third of food recalls last year—but due to the shellfish containing Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. Yes, radioactive. U.S. authorities detected the substance in shipping containers coming from Indonesia at four ports of entry (Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Savannah). Further testing revealed a small amount of the Cesium-137, or Cs-137, actually in one sample of breaded shrimp (at which port, they didn’t say). The discovery was enough for the FDA to recommend that Walmart stores stop selling specific Gre...

‘Bike taxis a necessity, not a luxury’: Karnataka HC slams bike taxi ban, says it’s legally untenable

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday strongly criticised the state government's ban on bike taxis, calling its rationale "thin" and "legally untenable". Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru, leading the bench, remarked that bike taxis were not a luxury but a necessity, especially for affordable last-mile transport in cities. The court noted that bike taxis are operational in at least 13 other Indian states and recognised as a legal and vital form of urban mobility. Rejecting the state’s claim that the Motor Vehicles Act bars bike taxis, according to news agency PTI, the court observed, “Lack of regulation cannot justify a blanket ban that deprives people of their right to livelihood under Article 19(1)(g).” (Also Read: Bengaluru's Namma Metro Yellow Line may soon reach Attibele, says DCM D...

Trump focuses on peace, Europe on the pieces

Lawrence Freedman, emeritus professor of war studies at King’s College London, has an acerbic description of the statecraft of US President Donald Trump: “Never assume you know what Donald Trump is going to do or say next because it is unlikely he does. Take seriously what he says at any time because that probably accurately reflects what he is thinking, but some of his thoughts can be very transitory and are soon replaced by others. If you don’t like the positions being held on one day, push back because he might be convinced to hold a different position the next. Equally, when satisfied with today’s position, do not assume it will last.”  Unsurprisingly, the representatives of Europe’s ruling elite who headed to the White House to meet with Trump on Monday counted that there was ...
