Artificial Intelligence may soon play a role in India’s top engineering entrance examinations, starting with JEE Main, as the Union Ministry of Education prepares a phased rollout plan.
According to officials familiar with the discussions, a pilot project using AI-driven systems is being considered for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), beginning with JEE Main. The move is part of broader efforts to modernise competitive examinations and improve efficiency, fairness, and security.
A detailed study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has examined how artificial intelligence can be used in question paper design, assessment support, and adaptive testing. The institute has submitted its report to the central government, recommending a controlled pilot before any large-scale implementation.
NEET and Other Tests May Follow Later
Officials indicated that the proposal involves experimenting with AI modules during the second session of JEE Main next year. Based on feedback, performance analysis, and technical evaluation, authorities are aiming for full-scale implementation by 2027. Initially, the use of AI will remain limited to JEE examinations, with the possibility of extending it later to NEET and other national-level entrance tests.
Under the proposed framework, AI would assist in designing question papers using syllabus-mapped data, chapter-wise weightage, and difficulty-level distribution. The goal is to ensure balanced question papers while reducing human bias and manual errors. However, final approval of all questions would continue to rest with authorised human officials.
The report also places strong emphasis on security and data protection. With over one million candidates appearing for JEE each year in an online format, IIT Bombay has recommended robust encryption, isolated datasets, and secure, centralised systems to prevent leaks or cyber threats.
While AI tools are already widely used in coaching platforms for personalised learning and mock tests, IIT Madras has urged caution in official exam settings. Experts from the institute have raised concerns about data privacy, algorithm transparency, and the risk of predictable question patterns if AI models rely on limited datasets.
The Ministry of Education is expected to hold further consultations with IITs and the National Testing Agency to finalise the roadmap. Officials stressed that exam integrity and fairness would remain the top priorities.
