During the year 2025, a total of 255 murder cases were reported within the limits of the three police commissionerates of Greater Hyderabad, indicating a decline compared to the previous year. The city recorded an average of 21 murder cases per month during the year in the jurisdiction of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachokona Police commissionerates.
In comparison, 2024 had witnessed a higher number of murders, with 282 cases reported across the three commissionerates. The reduction reflects a noticeable improvement in overall murder statistics, according to police data released during annual press conferences.
Area-wise figures for 2025 show that 69 murder cases were reported within the limits of Hyderabad city police. The Rachakonda commissionerate recorded 73 murders, while the Cyberabad commissionerate reported the highest number at 113 cases.
The data was compiled from official crime statistics released individually by the three commissionerates. Senior officers noted that while the decline is encouraging, the overall number remains a concern and calls for sustained preventive measures.
According to police officials and crime experts, excessive consumption of violent content on social media and digital platforms has emerged as one of the major contributing factors behind murders. In several instances, crimes occurred following heated arguments under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.
Substance abuse continues to play a significant role in triggering violent behaviour, with minor disputes and personal rivalries escalating into fatal incidents. Officials also highlighted that a higher number of murder cases involved young individuals, raising concerns about changing social behaviour patterns.
Experts have stressed the need for stronger awareness campaigns, regulation of online content, and focused interventions to address substance abuse among youth. Police authorities reiterated that preventive policing, community engagement, and timely intervention remain key to further reducing serious crimes in the city.
