Former Law Minister and senior advocate Asif Pasha passed away in Hyderabad on December 28, 2025, just three days after celebrating his 96th birthday. Known for his energy, optimism, and dignified public life, his demise marks the end of an era in Andhra Pradesh politics and legal circles.
Mr. Pasha was widely admired for his “never-say-die” spirit and affable nature. Even in his nineties, he remained mentally alert and socially engaged, earning respect across communities. His long life was marked by public service, legal excellence, and consistent advocacy for minority welfare.
In 1972, Asif Pasha was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from Vijayawada on a Congress ticket. With this victory, he created history by becoming the first Muslim Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. His legislative tenure was extended to six years, from 1972 to 1978, following the imposition of the Emergency in the country.
During his ministerial career, Mr. Pasha handled key portfolios including Law, Prisons, and Printing Press. His tenure was marked by administrative discipline and a strong emphasis on institutional integrity. Colleagues recall him as a minister who valued procedure, constitutional values, and fairness.
Beyond electoral politics, Asif Pasha played a significant role in minority institutions. He served as Chairman of the Minority Commission and later became the founder-Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Urdu Academy, contributing immensely to the promotion of Urdu language and culture in the state. He also served as a Trustee of the H.E.H. The Nizam’s Trust, reflecting his standing in public and charitable institutions.
Asif Pasha is survived by two sons and a daughter. His passing has drawn condolences from legal professionals, political leaders, and members of the public, particularly in Hyderabad, where he spent much of his later life. According to family members his Namaz e Janaza will be held after Zohr prayers at Masjid e Qutub Shahi near St. Ann’s College Mehdipatnam on 29 December Monday.
