The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has emerged as a notable player in the ongoing Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, winning six seats and leading on two so far as vote counting continues across Mumbai.
According to preliminary results, AIMIM candidates have secured victories Samajwadi Party’s MLA Abu Asim Azmi’s strong fort in Govandi Ward 134, Govandi Ward 136, Govandi 137, Govandi 138 and Govandi 139 and the Cheetah Camp area.
Party sources said the results reflect growing support for AIMIM among urban voters, particularly in eastern parts of Mumbai. Local civic issues, minority representation, and grassroots-level campaigning are believed to have played a key role in the party’s performance.
Meanwhile, vote counting continues for other major political parties contesting the BMC elections. The principal contenders include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Shiv Sena factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde, the Indian National Congress, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
According to the latest available snapshot, out of 227 wards, results for 225 wards have been counted. The BJP is leading with 99 seats, followed by the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) with 62 seats and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena with 31 seats. Congress has secured 13 seats, MNS nine seats, and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP two seats.
