Over 73 Lakh Traffic Violations Recorded in Hyderabad Despite Fewer Road Accidents

Hyderabad recorded a decline in road accidents and fatalities within the limits of the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate, even as traffic violations witnessed a sharp year-on-year rise in 2025.

According to official data released on Saturday by Hyderabad Police Commssioner VC Sajjanar in an annual press conference, a total of 2,679 road accidents were reported in Hyderabad this year, resulting in 296 deaths. In comparison, 2024 saw 3,058 accidents, in which 301 people lost their lives. The figures indicate a noticeable reduction in both accidents and fatalities on city roads.

Officials attribute the decline in accidents to improved enforcement, increased surveillance, and better awareness among commuters. Measures such as intensified patrolling, traffic monitoring through cameras, and targeted safety drives appear to have contributed to safer road conditions across the city.

However, the same data highlights a worrying trend in traffic rule violations. In 2024, Hyderabad recorded 5,294,740 traffic violations. This number rose sharply to 7,369,340 in 2025, reflecting a numerical increase of 2,074,600 cases.

The year-on-year increase represents a jump of 39.2 percent, signalling stricter enforcement as well as persistent indiscipline among motorists. A news-style summary of the data notes that traffic violations in Hyderabad rose by over 20.7 lakh cases in 2025, marking a sharp increase compared to the previous year.

Cases of riding without a helmet rose to 41.28 lakh in 2025, up from 25.62 lakh in 2024, while over-speeding cases jumped to 2.34 lakh this year from 66,528 last year. Similarly, minor driving cases almost doubled, with 7,808 cases registered in 2025 compared to 3,283 cases in 2024.

Traffic police officials believe the rise in violations is partly due to enhanced digital monitoring systems and automated challan generation, which have improved detection rates. At the same time, authorities have acknowledged the need for sustained public education on traffic rules and responsible driving.

As Hyderabad continues to expand with increasing vehicle density, officials stress that reducing violations is as important as lowering accident numbers. Ensuring compliance with traffic laws, they say, will be critical to maintaining long-term road safety in the city.
